What is Saw Palmetto and how will it help with hair growth?

Saw palmetto is a supplement made from the fruit of the Serenoa repens tree. It is a type of palm-like plant that is native to the southeastern United States. This plant has quite a deep history because it has been used in natural medicine for hundreds of years by the Native Americans, Mayans, and the Seminoles. They took the berries for nutritional, diuretic, sedative, aphrodisiac, and cough-reducing properties.

Saw palmetto has been clinically shown to help prevent testosterone conversion to DHT, a naturally occurring hormone in the body that can shrink hair follicles. As men age, their testosterone hormone decreases, and the hormone called 5α-Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) increases. One of the primary causes of hair loss is oftentimes due to the hair follicles’ sensitivity to DHT, which is a male androgen hormone that causes follicles to contract, resulting in a shorter life span and decrease of hair production.
In typical situations, once a hair falls out, another strand would grow from that same hair follicle, but when DHT is higher than normal, the growth of hair will decrease. Saw palmetto helps stop the conversion of testosterone into DHT, by blocking the activity of 5-alpha reductase (5α-R), (the enzyme that is responsible for converting testosterone), to dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
